Oh boy. I don’t cry often when I read fic, but here are a few that hit the spot for me. Mind the tags, these are quite angsty and not all of them end happily.
Remember to leave kudos and comments for your hard-working authors!
ad astra per aspera by @flange5 and @brandnewfashion : And now it’s been ten years since he’s first met Steve, two years since they’d had a proper conversation, but eleven stars still bearing variations of his name. (616)
Untitled by @onemuseleft : Steve has regrets. Tony is out of his depth. (616)
Better This Time by nightwalker ( @onemuseleft ): It had been two years without Tony at his side and his back, two years nursing a resentment and an anger that had refused to fade. It was time to move on, and Steve didn’t want to do it alone. (616)
Coping by nightwalker ( @onemuseleft ): Steve Rogers is very good at surviving, whether he likes it or not. (MA:A, major character death)
The Spark That Started the Fire by Sineala ( @sineala ): It started with two men. But it ended with two men, too. (Or: A quiet evening on Battleworld, in which there are desert islands, campfires, apologies, and proposals. Also nudity.) (616)
Secrets and Surprises by laireshi ( @laireshi ): Tony’s preparing for his and Steve’s anniversary. The only issue? Steve realises that Tony’s hiding something and, given their history, suspects it’s something sinister. (616)
Catching Lightning in a Bottle by sabrecmc ( @sabrecmc ): College student Tony meets janitor Steve at MIT and they fall blissfully in love until Howard happens and things fall apart. One divorce paperwork snafu courtesy of the ever-helpful Jarvis, and ten years later, Tony has to get re-divorced from Steve. This does not go as he imagines.
Or, the Sweet Home Alabama AU that no one–well, okay, a few of you–asked for.
Wrapped Up In Clover by FestiveFerret ( @festiveferret ): It’s been seven years since Steve and Tony split up, and Steve’s sure he’ll never see Tony again. He’s finally managed to put their failed relationship behind him and move on, focusing on his friends and building his business. But then his best friends, Bucky and Clint, decide to get married, and their wedding week at a cabin resort in Vermont turns into a minefield of heartbreak for Steve.
almeno tu nell’universo by silkspectred ( @silkspectred ): Tony drives off. Well, he wants to. But he can’t. Because. Steve Rogers is in front of his car.
Steve fucking Rogers. Is in front of Tony’s fucking car. (CA:CW fix-it)
Last Train Home by erde: Steve writes letters to Tony that he never sends. By the time he hands them to their rightful owner, Tony has had a brush with death, has retired as a superhero, and now has a small town workshop of his very own. But it’s okay, Steve has gone into retirement too. (CA:CW fix-it)
Bring Him Home by seventymilestobabylon: Tony misses Steve very badly after the Accords. Some days he deals with it better than other days. (CA:CW sort of fix-it)
What’s In a Name by izazov ( @izazov ): Tony never calls him by his name anymore. It’s only ‘Captain’ for him now. (CA:CW not-a-fix-it)
over by soniclipstick ( @soniclipstick ): It breaks Steve’s heart, that even when it’s all over and done with, it isn’t. Even when they put their weapons away and try to live the life and sleep in the bed that they now share, they’re still fighting a seemingly never-ending war on the home-front. (post-canon)
What Rough Beast by immoral_crow: Steve Rogers, super soldier. It’s amazing really that it takes them all so long to work out just what the serum can do… but given enough time all things become apparent. This is a story about love, and loss; the things we would do to be true to ourselves and true to our hearts; and the prices you must pay to do that. (major character death)
