What was Iron Man/Tony Stark doing between the events of Iron Man and Iron Man 2?

After Tony’s rather shocking reveal as Iron Man the world press is in turmoil and he is heavily criticized for both his ‘hedonistic’ past turned hero complex and the sudden change of his company’s direction. But he is persistent in his decision to withdraw from weapons manufacturing, regardless of the serious repercussions such as losses worth billions of dollars caused by forfeited military contracts and plummeting company shares.

“CEO Tony Stark promised that the next generation of Stark products would surpass all the past achievements for which the company is renowned. It’s new direction will focus on humanitarian causes. Solutions towards creating peace in the world will be solved though developing sustainable solutions to a variety of social unrest throughout the world.”

While juggling the needs of his company as its current CEO, he also embraces his new role as the only public superhero worldwide in the coming 6 months (up until the events of IM2).

In California, Iron Man extinguished runaway wildfires with sonic blasts and helped evacuate families trapped behind the firebreak.

At Los Angeles International Airport, Iron Man brought a stricken airliner in for a safe touchdown.

When an experimental “miracle submarine” experienced trouble in the Pacific, Iron Man saved its crew from perishing in the ocean depths.

By intervening in a number of political brushfires across Eastern Europe, Iron Man earned widespread praise for establishing East-West relations.

For his heroic deeds he was awarded a medal of honor and was Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year 2009. He was an established and celebrated hero long before he joined The Avengers Initiative.

It hits Steve like a bolt out of the blue one day.

Tony is texting him about–everything, really, from his robots to where they’re going to go out for dinner after Tony beats him at basketball to the Next Big Thing he’s working on that should probably be Top Secret but he trusts Steve so implicitly that it doesn’t enter his mind to hide it. Steve has never had anyone trust him as much as Tony does. Hell, even Bucky has hidden things from him. And he trusts Tony just as much.

So he types “I’m going to marry you” before he even really thinks about it. He stares at his phone. They’re not even technically dating but he knows he’s going to marry Tony someday.

Tony’s response is slow but exactly what Steve expected. “No ones going to marry me I’m a handful.” Tony would think that. He was much too critical of himself.

“I am,” Steve insists, and then, before Tony can argue, adds, “I have two hands don’t worry.”

“You’re such a goober Steve,” Tony responds after a while.

It’s not an acceptance. It’s not a denial either, though.

(“Would Tony wear a ring or would it be too dangerous,” Steve asks Natasha later.

She sighs and doesn’t look up from her magazine. “If you were the one who gave it to him, I think he would risk the degloving to wear it.”

“I’m gonna marry him,” Steve tells her.

“Keep in mind that Tony’s a spring bride and you should be golden,” Natasha answers.

Steve looks at her for a long time. “You could look a little more surprised.”

“Everyone knows you’re in love with each other except for you two idiots,” Natasha scoffs.)
